Abstract

The rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) applications in the lab have created considerable excitement and confusion for R&D trying to figure out the best path forward. This is especially true in the coatings industry, where price, sustainability and regulatory pressures are at an all-time high.  
 
This session will provide an overview of the potential for AI and ML in the coatings lab, including realistic expectations of its application and usage. It will explore specific scenarios in leveraging AI and ML during formulation and experimentation for property optimization, identification of new raw materials candidates, and early screening of compliance goals during the discovery process. The role of data ecosystems and scientist contributions, both of which are critical for enabling AI/ML at scale, will also be discussed.
